On Thursday 31st March, Uganda Breweries Limited hosted the Luzira Neighborhood Association to a plant tour to specifically learn about what the company is doing in the area of water conservation and waste water treatment.

The visit which initially started as a fault-finding mission quickly turned into an eye opening experience for the association members when they learnt and saw firsthand that the water Uganda Breweries Limited discharges into the lake is of a much better quality than what the company draws out from the lake.

The association was full of praise for Uganda Breweries Limited’s processes and pledged to be our ambassadors in the face of any dissenting voices.

The visit and subsequent comments further confirmed our ambition to be the best performing, most trusted and respected consumer Products Company in Uganda.

Background of the ETP

The original ETP was installed in 2005 when the site production was around 800,000 hl/yr. It was required to treat waste water before discharging it to Lake Victoria meeting the local discharge standards set by the Ugandan government.

The Bell brewery operations have grown in recent years to exceed the design capacity of the ETP. Therefore, a plant expansion of around 100% of the existing capacity is required to restore the brewery to compliance at its current production and to be compliant for the projected site capacity.

An investment of £4.2m for the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) expansion will allow UBL to comply with local regulatory consent limits for the discharge of waste water from at an expanded site production capacity of up to 1.4million hl/yr.
